Everything feels blurry, she is overwhelmed by her own emotions, but she puts her trust in this man to not take advantage of that, to not kill her. They enter an abandoned-looking building. A large empty chamber, with a small side chamber. Sam opens a window on the roof letting in some light but they are still in private. Just the two of them.
“Thank you” she whispers while wiping her tears and regaining herself. “You’re welcome, but you don’t have to thank me…. Mortality is scary.” He swallows coming closer to her touching her shoulders.
“I guess that is true for most, but the thing I fear most is failing… I fear my soul going to my father. I had a way out, I succeeded, I…. it….” Adaly starts stuttering, feeling her emotions overwhelming her once more. Sam grabs her closer, holding her, he lowers her face, so she is looking at him “It is okay to be scared, there is nothing wrong with that. Strength is having fears and still facing them, you are one of the strongest people I know” “Amara” Adaly chuckles through her tears, but Sam keeps staring at her seriously.
“Yes, Amara is physically strong, but Adaly, you have been through so much… And you are still fighting. Any lesser person would have given up by now” Sam continues, and Adaly looks at him sadly “I have no choice…” he grabs the sides of her face, looking at her intently “You do. We all do… You could have joined Ilhoketh when you were younger, but you didn’t. You could have given up during the Es-Vahelieth fight and died, but you didn’t, you kept fighting. I am just sorry I wasn’t there to help you”
She nods in understanding looking slightly away, taking a step back “I was actually happy you weren’t there”. Sam brings himself closer to her. Their bodies are close to each other, touching each other. Adaly’s heart starts rushing, she wants to kiss him, wants to forget all the worries and just be with this man. “And why is that?” he asks insecurely. She closes the distance 90% of the way, stopping close to his face looking at his lips looking at the man she started to develop feelings for. She whispers “I couldn’t have bared worrying about losing you…” Sam looks at her and kisses her.
Adaly’s heart racing, grabbing him even closer, feeling his warmth, his soft lips, his beard tickling her chin. Their lip’s part, but their heads still leaning on each other. Both of them are breathing heavily. “I’m sorry if…” Sam starts but Adaly interrupts him with another kiss. It is just as electrifying as the one before, her entire body wanting him, and she can feel him feeling the same.
His hands following her contours, touching her leather armor, while her hands move through his hair. She adds her tongue to the mix and Sam eagerly intertwines it with his.
Their kiss seems to last forever before they split again. Both of their breathing accelerated looking at each other “I…” Adaly start saying but bites her lip. “That was…” Sam starts also clearly processing what just happened. Adaly swallows “We… we should get going…. The funeral is not going to wait on us.”
She takes a step back looks insecurely at the ground before Sam steps in front of her “I… we… was that okay?” he asks, and she smiles at him, licking her lips, tasting him on them “It was… I… we should talk about this later. It was something…” “Special” Sam finishes the sentence, and she nods in agreement.
Sam and Adaly walk towards the paladin order in silence. Both of them are processing the kiss. Adaly had never had such an electrifying kiss before. It makes her excited and nervous at the same time, but she pushes her emotions to the side when they enter the paladin order.
Damon is standing in the main hallway and immediately comes towards them when they enter “Adaly, Sam, good to see you, thanks for coming. I would like to talk to you in the morning, we have some updates” Damon says and Adaly nods in agreement “Indeed let’s talk business in the morning, now we should mourn Jack. Jeremy, Amara and Livia sadly couldn’t join us but send their condolences” Damon nods in thanks.
They wait a bit longer at the order, before the three of them, and many other paladins walk towards the cliff. Adaly and Sam hang a bit in the back letting the others take a closer place to the priest and just observe the ceremony from a distance. Adaly watching the priest, just listening to their speech about how death is unfair but part of life, and how brave Jack was protecting the king.
She can feel Sam’s eyes more focused on her than at the ceremony but chooses to ignore it. She just takes a second to remember Jack’s eyes when he followed her into his death. His untimely death she should have been able to prevent. A tear slips down, while she hugs herself with her arms. But she is more in control of her emotions now than in the past days, so she just listens and observes.
After the ceremony, Adaly and Sam walk back in silence, as tradition, but also Adaly is lost for words. They enter the inn where earlier in the day they had booked two rooms. Adaly just finds a seat and Sam goes to the bar and comes back with two ales. She takes the mug “Cheers” she smiles sadly to Sam. He just knowingly nods.
Both of them take a sip “It was a nice ceremony, right” Sam asks looking at her intently. His stare makes her feel naked, even more than actually being undressed in front of him. “Yes, it was very moving” she replies, a bit surprised by the lack of emotion in her voice. It was a nice ceremony, and she was glad she attended. But with everything going on it wasn’t the time for mourning just yet. “I understand” Sam just says.
She was grateful about this day, she had some time to process Jack’s death, but also time to process her own near-death experience. However, truly stopping and mourning would not fit in with their busy schedules.
They finish their ales with little other words and go up to their respected rooms. Splitting up for the night feels wrong, crosses Adaly’s thought when she enters her room. She changes into the oversized tunic she typically sleeps in and goes to sit on the bed.
It feels wrong for her to be alone. She wants company, her body requesting a release. She is doubting if she wants to go back to the tavern and pick someone up or if she should go to Sam.
The kiss they shared was nice and special. A clear indication he has some feelings for her too. She doesn’t want to ruin that, but on the other hand picking up a random person would also do that, and she does want him. She stands up, hearing his heartbeat still moving around in the room. She goes to knock on his door.
He opens the door, only wearing his underpants. “Yes, Adaly” her heart skips a beat before she replies “Could I maybe spend the night here?” “Of course” he opens the door further and she walks in.
